The Japanese particle の (no)

Learn how の (no) connects people, objects, places, and categories, and how to put those relationships in Japanese order.

Lulochan

You are preparing for a trip to Japan. You have your passport, a hotel booking, and a list of Tokyo restaurants. One particle connects all of those relationships in Japanese: の (no).

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to say that something belongs to you, describe where something comes from, and build expressions such as “a Tokyo restaurant” or “a Japanese teacher”.

A connection between two nouns

の (no) connects two nouns. The pattern is A の B (A no B).

A describes B. B is the main thing you are talking about.

わたしwatashinoパスポートpasupooto
My passport.

Here, パスポート (pasupooto), passport, is the main thing. 私 (watashi), I, tells us who it belongs to.

Possession: who something belongs to

Possession is the easiest use to recognize.

マリアMarianoかばんkaban
Maria's bag.

English puts the owned object first in “Maria's bag”. Japanese puts Maria first and the bag last: マリアのかばん (Maria no kaban).

Now build “my passport” in Japanese order:

It is not always possession

Translating の (no) as “of” or an apostrophe helps at first, but it does not cover everything. The relationship can also express origin, location, category, or content.

東京とうきょうTokyonoレストランresutoran
A Tokyo restaurant.

Tokyo does not own the restaurant. 東京 (Tokyo) tells us where it is or what place it is connected to.

日本にほんNihonno料理りょうりryouri
Japanese food.

Japan does not own all the food either. 日本 (Nihon) tells us the origin or category of 料理 (ryouri), food. You can reuse this vocabulary when you learn to order food in Japanese.

The main word comes last

In A の B (A no B), B is always the main word.

日本の料理 (Nihon no ryouri) is a kind of food. 料理の本 (ryouri no hon) is a kind of book.

料理りょうりryourinoほんhon
A cookbook.

Changing the order changes what you are talking about. This is the key idea of the lesson: look after の (no) to find the main thing.

People and roles

The same structure can describe what kind of person someone is.

日本語にほんごNihongono先生せんせいsensei
A Japanese teacher.

先生 (sensei) is the main person. 日本語 (Nihongo), Japanese, describes what they teach.

Connecting more than two nouns

You can chain relationships. Each の (no) connects the noun before it with what follows.

東京とうきょうTokyono寿司すしsushinoレストランresutoran
A Tokyo sushi restaurant.

You do not need long chains as a beginner. Two or three nouns are enough. Read from the end: it is a restaurant, for sushi, in Tokyo.

Use it with your own things

Look at three objects you would take to Japan. Say 私の (watashi no) followed by the name of each one. Then imagine a place or food you want to experience and describe it with A の B (A no B).

Once you remember that A describes and B is the main thing, の (no) stops being a translation trick and becomes a tool for building relationships.
